Shelby Tells Her T1D Story at JDRF Luncheon

Shelby was asked to be the youth speaker at the JDRF One Walk Progress to Type None luncheon in San Francisco this year.  She simply told her T1D story.

Focused on San Francisco in 2013!

October 2013 marks the 12th anniversary of Shelby's diagnosis with T1D!  Scott's 4th T1D anniversary is coming up in December.  We just learned that there are 10 T1D students at Shelby's school this year!

We need to walk to find a cure!  We will walk so a cure can be found!  Join us in this effort because we can't wait for someone else to get this done - it's up to US!

Oakland Walk was Fantastic!

The Walk to Cure Diabetes held at the Oakland Zoo is now a terrific memory!  The event raised more than $333,000, as of walk day, to support the JDRF's efforts to fund research into the causes, treatments and cures for T1D.  Shelby & Co. raised almost $1,000 this year, which we could not have done without all of your fantastic support!

We've posted photos from the Silicon Valley and Oakland walks!  Though we missed some team members who couldn't make it this year, we were delighted to be joined by Liz's cousin Dawn and her family for the first time!

Still to come are walks in San Francisco on Oct. 28 and Irvine on Nov. 4, which will be led by Scott's sister Marianne.  Shelby & Co. is branching out all over California!  If you'd like to know how to start a chapter near you, let us know!

Why is Shelby & Co. Still Walking for a Cure?

Shelby & Co. began 11 years ago, when our daughter - Shelby - was diagnosed weeks before her 3rd birthday with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).  Her immune system had turned on itself and destroyed all the cells in her pancreas that produce insulin.

We rushed her to the hospital, spent three days on the pediatrics ward in "Diabetes Boot Camp," then took our little daughter home with this assurance - She would live the rest of her life taking insulin shots, and face the distinct possibility of developing a life-threatening complication at any time.

Doctors had very few answers.  They had no cure.  Research was happening around the world on this chronic disease that is impacting more and more people each year - totally unchecked.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was started by parents facing the same uncertain, scary future as us.  They couldn't wait for the government to offer up a solution or even a serious commitment to research funding. So they began raising funds themselves from their friends and neighbors.  Today, the JDRF is the largest non-governmental direct funder of research into the causes, treatments and cures for T1D in the world!

We started Shelby & Co. to support the JDRF's efforts in any small way that we could. Honestly, it was all we could do.

Scott (Timeless)

Just three years ago, Shelby's father, Scott, was diagnosed with T1D at age 42! Born with the genetic predisposition, which he had already passed on totally unawares to Shelby, the still mysterious environmental trigger caused Scott's immune system to turn on itself, too.  Now, Shelby & Co. walks for two.

Our goal is simple: Fight diabetes one step at a time and raise money to help the JDRF find a cure in Shelby's lifetime!

Researchers are doing tremendous work!  This is a reachable goal!  But the effort needs to be funded, and we don't want to leave that up to the politicians.
